From idyllic nature spots to urban settings with plenty of character, these locations are guaranteed to make your photos stand out. So whether you’re shooting a fashion editorial or a family portrait, be sure to check out our list of the absolute best photoshoot locations in Toronto.

My Favorite Toronto Photography Spots

I just love Toronto! After compiling this comprehensive list of photo locations, one thing is clear. Toronto is amazing.

Out of all the possible cities with great photoshoot locations, Toronto might just be the best in Canada. So, without further introduction here are my favorite Toronto photography locations:

The Distillery District

The Distillery District is a historic neighborhood in Toronto. The area was once home to dozens of distilleries, and many of the original buildings have been preserved and repurposed as restaurants, shops, and galleries.

The Distillery District is now a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, and it is known for its festive atmosphere and charming Victorian architecture. The area is also home to the annual Toronto Christmas Market, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors. If you’re looking for a unique shopping or dining experience, the Distillery District is definitely worth a visit.

The Distillery District is one of the most popular photoshoot locations in Toronto right now. And it’s no wonder why! With its charming cobblestone streets and beautiful Victorian architecture, the Distillery District is the perfect setting for a romantic photoshoot, an engagement shoot, or a headshot session. But beware: the Distillery District can be a bit tourist-heavy. So, if you’re looking to avoid the crowds, be sure to shoot early in the morning or later in the evening. And don’t forget to wear proper footwear. High heels and cobblestone streets are a dangerous combination.

The Toronto Islands

The Toronto Islands are a grouping of small islands in Lake Ontario, located just offshore from the city of Toronto. The islands are a popular recreation destination, with attractions such as beaches, parks, and a ferry service directly from downtown. The islands are also home to several unique natural habitats, including forests, and wetlands. These habitats support a diverse range of wildlife, including several species of migratory birds. The Toronto Islands are an important part of the city’s history and culture, and they continue to play an important role in the lives of Torontonians today.

The islands are one of the more popular Toronto photoshoot locations for engagement shoots and family portraits. And with good reason! The islands offer stunning views of the city skyline, as well as plenty of opportunities for playful beach photos.

The Toronto Islands can be quite crowded during the summer months. So, if you’re looking to avoid crowds, you might just want to move to Hamilton.

Do I Need a Photography Permit in Toronto?

Yes and no. At most of the locations on this list you won’t need a photography permit. At some locations, you will definitely need a permit.

Toronto is a very photography friendly city and most of these photoshoot locations are wide open for photography. It also really depends on the type of photography, a large commercial shoot is going to need certain permissions. Also, if you are just shooting subjects like buildings, you shouldn’t need a permit from the location.

There is not really a specific photography permit that is issued from the city of Toronto. You can shoot in most places that are City-owned, but it is best to check. Most of the rules and regulations are centered around the flow of traffic, not impeding pedestrians stuff like that – I am not a lawyer. If you want to shut down a street, run a major production there is a process for that.

Private property will often have a photography permit system where you pay to use the facility, and get private access. In most cases, the fees go directly to running the premises. Don’t forget to do your part, paying for a permit or giving a donation helps keep these great places to take photos in Toronto alive.

Once again, it is always better to ask.

    Hello Robert,

Thanks for the list of favourite photography spots in Toronto! I shoot medium format B&W film on my Mamiya RZ67 camera, and your extensive list has inspired me to check them out.

You mentioned Trinity College (University of Toronto) in your list, and I have photographed in the past a variety of exterior architectural detail images at University College (UC – St. George Campus, University of Toronto). The Victorian architecture at UC is pretty interesting and makes for some really good B&W photographic images. Thanks for your lsit!
