The following is a case study about a golf tournament photography & videography project we completed for Sobeys, a large Canadian supermarket chain. Each year Sobeys puts on a charitable golf tournament, called the Empire Golf Classic and invites various suppliers and sponsors to participate and raise funds for charities within the health and wellness sector. The purpose of the project was to put together a video reel with the highlights of the day, as well as capture images of the participants and sponsors.

The annual Empire Golf Classic takes place at Rattlesnake Point Golf Club in Milton, Ontario. The event is a full-day affair starting with registration & breakfast, followed by a shotgun start, then post-tournament reception with prizes, acknowledgements and announcements.

Who is Sobeys?

Sobeys is a prominent Canadian supermarket chain with a rich history dating back to 1912 with their first store opening in Stellarton, Nova Scotia. By 1962, the company grew to operate 39 stores across the Maritime provinces and in 1987 began their expansion throughout Canada. Now, as one of the nation’s foremost food retailers, Sobeys operates over 1,500 stores across Canada under various banners, catering to diverse customer needs with a commitment to quality, freshness, and exceptional service.

The company began with a goal of bringing products from local farmers to consumers in an more convenient way. The company really started in 1907 with a horse & buggy delivery services for meats. With the success of the delivery service, it sparked a vision that more products could be accessible and thus the birth of Sobeys stores. 115+ years later, their purpose remains the same – A Family Nurturing Families.

What Makes Sobeys Different?

Sobeys inherently is a grocery store and these days there is plenty of competition. However, Sobeys stands apart from their competitors through their fierce drive in corporate responsibility. Sobeys community investment program focuses on two areas; nourishing health bodies & nurturing healthy minds. Charities that they partner with include but are not limited to; Kids Help Phone, Children’s Hospitals throughout the country, Special Olympics Canada, and various Food Banks & Meal Programs.

Sobeys raises funds in 3 ways; through strategic partnerships, regional donations, as well as local donations from individual stores. In 2023, Sobeys raised:

  • $17 Million is strategic partnerships
  • More than $650,000 via regional donations through their Community Action Fund.
  • $1.6 Million through local donations from individual stores.

The Empire Golf Tournament is one key strategy that helps Sobeys raise funds to meet their community investment goals.

The Process:

Photography

To comprehensively cover the event, we adopted a multifaceted approach to our photography. During the golf tournament itself, we captured a mix of posed images of the teams, as well as action shots of participants golfing. The goal was to document the camaraderie of the day and spirit of the day with genuine reactions and interactions.

In addition to the participants, we also documented the various sponsor activations scattered across the course. These activations played a crucial role in engaging attendees and promoting the sponsors’ brands and involvement.

Our coverage also extended to the post-tournament reception, where we captured the awarding of prizes, the acknowledgements, and the celebratory atmosphere. This thorough photographic documentation enabled us to convey the full spectrum of the day’s activities, highlighting both the competitive and communal aspects of the event.

Most importantly, it was essential for us to capture images of the various charities associated with the event. Photographs featuring representatives from organizations like Kids Help Phone, Children’s Hospitals, Special Olympics Canada, and various Food Banks underscored the impact and reach of the Empire Golf Classic. By showcasing these moments, we highlighted the tangible difference Sobeys’ contributions make in supporting these causes and help humanize the initiatives. These images not only preserve the memory of the event but also serve as powerful reminders of the meaningful work being done within the community.

Videography

Creating a highlight video for the Empire Golf Classic involved a meticulous and strategic approach to ensure all key elements of the event were captured and presented in an engaging and fun, yet professional manner. Our process begins with detailed planning, where we outline the main segments of the event that need to be featured, including the opening registration, key moments on the golf course, interactive charity & sponsor booths, as well as the closing reception. We used high-definition cameras and drones to capture dynamic footage from various angles, providing a comprehensive visual narrative of the day.

During the tournament, our focus was on capturing the participants’ enthusiasm and the community’s spirited interactions. Key highlights included golfers teeing off, candid reactions, and heartfelt moments between players and sponsors, which are essential to conveying the event’s atmosphere. We also ensured that the charitable organizations involved were prominently featured, showcasing their representatives and the positive interactions with Sobeys’ team members and event participants.

Post-event, the editing process was crucial for transforming raw footage into a compelling highlight reel. We selected the most impactful clips and put them together strategically to create and authentic and impactful reel. Music and graphics were added to enhance the visual storytelling, emphasizing Sobeys’ commitment to community investment and corporate social responsibility.
