Horseshoe Bend.

BEHIND THE IMAGE

Horseshoe Bend is located in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area of Northern Arizona. This unique horseshoe shaped bend was carved into Glen Canyon by the Colorado River in a process that took millions of years to complete. The result is an overwhelmingly beautiful landscape that is visited by thousands of sightseers every year. Many take the somewhat difficult 2.4 kilometer trek to the Horseshoe Bend Overlook to get a better look at this photogenic site from 300 meters up.

The Colorado River played a prominent role in creating Horseshoe Bend and it is currently a dominant river in the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico. Massive in size, it runs for 2,330 kilometers through parts of 2 Mexican states and 7 states in the United States. The Colorado River is essential to life in all of these areas. This is especially true in the areas containing deserts. Sadly, there are concerns that this mighty river may run dry due to overusage, dams, and climate change.

Horseshoe Bend was taken on a precipice overlooking Glen Canyon. This angle allows the viewer to experience this amazing vista of towering multicoloured sandstone formations. As you look at this picture, you may feel that you are actually there peering down the cliff to the green foliage and waters below. Looking up you can see a beautifully coloured sky and in the distance majestic sandstone rock formations as far as the eye can see.
