Arches National Park is a United States National Park located in eastern Utah. The park protects over 2,000 natural sandstone arches (the largest number of arches in the world), including the world-famous Delicate Arch, as well as a variety of unique geological resources and formations. It contains the highest density of natural arches in the world.
The park consists primarily of Slickrock sandstone formations where erosion has occurred along deep fractures. The primary processes by which erosion occurs include saltation (small rocks bouncing downslope), weathering (from freeze-thaw cycles and plant roots), and physical abrasion (rocks grinding against each other). These forces work together to slowly erode the rock, revealing the stunning arches for which the park is named.
