Snow Dune

BEHIND THE IMAGE

Located in southern Colorado, the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve was very aptly named after its massively sized sand dunes. The sand dunes found here are the largest in North America and although their shape can fluctuate with the wind, they can reach an amazing height of at least 229 meters.

As captured in Snow Dune, the landscape in the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is a unique combination of many landscapes. Visiting here you can expect to see not only sand dunes, but also wetlands, forests and alpine lakes. The amazing thing about this environment is that all these very different landscapes are located relatively close to each other.

The climate varies from 24 degrees celsius in the summer to minus 20 degrees celsius in the winter. Surprisingly, if you were to be in the sand dunes area of this national park and preserve in the winter, you could expect to see snow falling at least once a week.

About 530,000 people come to this area every year to have fun. Artists are attracted to the surreal and beautiful scenery. Sports enthusiasts enjoy sandboarding and sandsledding down the gigantic sand dunes. Others come out to fish, gaze at the stars or hike and explore the many trails found at the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve.

In this photograph, a bright blue sky hovers over snow capped mountains and sand dunes. Looking at this picture, you can almost feel the cold crisp air and feel the wonder of standing on snow covered sand dunes.
