COLORADO

Colorado is situated in the western United States. It is surrounded by Wyoming and Nebraska to the north; Kansas and Oklahoma to the east; New Mexico to the south; and Utah and Arizona to the west.

 

The state capital and the largest city is Denver with a population of approximately 2.8 million people. The total population of Colorado is approximately 5.8 million. Colorado is 269,837 square kilometers in size and is known for its deserts, mesas, canyons, mountains, forests, plateaus, high plains, and rivers. Portions of the Rocky Mountains, the Great Plains, and the Colorado Plateau are found in Colorado.

 

The climate varies a great deal throughout this state, depending on the location. For example, a semi-arid climate exists in the eastern plains; and an alpine climate exists in the higher elevations in the foothills.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK

Rocky Mountain National Park was established in 1915 in north-central Colorado. It is  1,074 square kilometers in size and is home to the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, glaciers, clear mountain lakes, and forests.

GREAT SAND DUNES NATIONAL PARK

Great Sand Dunes National Park was designated as a national park in 2004. This picturesque area in south-southern Colorado is 434 square kilometers in size and is known for the tallest sand dunes in North America.

BLACK CANYON OF THE GUNNISON NATIONAL PARK

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is located in Western Colorado. It was designated as a national park in 1999 and is 124.4 square kilometers in size. This national park is known for the Gunnison River and the majestic Black Canyon
