ALBERTA

Alberta is situated in western Canada. It is surrounded by the Northwest Territories to the north; to the east by Saskatchewan; to the south by Montana, and to the west by British Columbia. The provincial capital of Alberta is Edmonton, with a population of approximately 972,000.

 

Alberta’s largest city is Calgary with a population of approximately 1.3 million. The total population of Alberta is about 4.4 million people. Alberta is 661,848 square kilometers in size and it is known for its diverse landscape that includes prairie landscapes, lakes, rivers, mountains, ice fields, badlands, and forests. Its climate is mainly humid continental.

BANFF NATIONAL PARK

Banff National Park was established in 1885 in southwestern Alberta. It is 6,641 square kilometers in size and contains the western portion of the Rocky Mountains, a Unesco World Heritage site. Banff National Park is also known for its forests, lakes, ice fields, glaciers and alpine landscapes.

JASPER NATIONAL PARK

Jasper National Park, is included in the Rocky Mountains’ designation as a Unesco World Heritage site. Located north of Banff National Park, Jasper was established in 1930 and is 11,000 square kilometers in size. It is known for its picturesque landscape sites that include Pyramid Lake and Mountain, Mount Edith Cavell, Maligned and Medicine Lakes, the Tonquin Valley, and the Columbia Ice field.

WATERTON LAKES NATIONAL PARK

Waterton National Park was established in southwestern Alberta in 1895. It is 505 square kilometers in size and has a varied landscape that includes a portion of the Rocky Mountains, forests, alpine meadows and valleys. It is known for the Waterton Lakes, Cameron Falls and Red Rock Canyon.
