Professional Photographers Understand Copyright, Photo Releases and Property Rights

Copyright law can be a bit of a minefield for those who are unfamiliar with it. Professional photographers need to have a firm understanding of copyright, photo releases and property rights in order to avoid any legal trouble.

Copyright law protects original works of authorship, such as brand logos, unique designs and identifiable trademarks to name a few. This means that photographers have to know what can and can’t be in a photograph before a client goes to print. That new shirt might look great, but if it has a brand name on it you could be in trouble.

You most likely will need a model release for anyone in your photos. A model release is a document that grants someone else the right to use a photograph of a person for a specific purpose. This is a must in advertising and protects your business down the line. If the photographs are editorial in nature, the release isn’t always needed. That being said always better safe than sorry.

Finally, it’s important to understand property rights. This refers to the right of someone to control how their property is used. In the context of photography, this means that you need to get permission from the owner of a property before you can take photos of it. Professional photographers need to be aware of all these legal issues in order to avoid any problems down the road. They will know what is admissible and what is not.

Professional Photographers Know What Photos to Take and How They Will be Used

A professional photographer is an artist who knows how to capture the perfect photo. They know what photos to take and how they will be used. They know that magazine cover needs negative space, and website banners are generally very wide, for example. They understand how the photo will be used, and will usually shoot different variations to fit your needs.

Depending on the project, they may use different techniques to get the best results. There are specialists within each field. Look for a photographer who serves businesses specifically. Weddings and commercial photography are very, very different.

Great Professional Photographers Stand Behind the Quality of Their Work

A great professional photographer is someone who stands behind the quality of their work. They want you to be happy with your photos, and they will do whatever it takes to make sure that you are. If you’re not satisfied with the photographs, they will re-shoot them for free. And if there’s ever a problem with one of their products, they will replace it for you right away. In short, when you hire a great professional photographer, you can be confident that you’re getting the best possible service.

When it comes to your photos, don’t settle for anything less than the best. Hire a professional photographer and rest assured that your photos will be beautiful, stylish, and of the highest quality. You won’t regret it!

When To Hire a Professional Photographer?

Now that you know some of the benefits of hiring a professional photographer, you might be wondering when the best time to do it is. The reality is you should hire a photographer every time your visual needs are vitally important. Taking a few behind-the-scenes shots for social or the cell pic for progress reports – there is nothing wrong with that. But, if it is anything important, and client-facing like the main pages of your website, you are doing yourself one heck of a disservice by not having professionally executed photography.

I remember a time a few years back. A kitchen design company was running a major campaign across multiple high-trafficked billboards in my community. I’m not going to name, names here but we are talking about a major ad spend in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Maybe more.

Anyway, they ran it with the main photo that was clearly taken on a cell phone or maybe, and I am being generous here a point and shoot camera. Their work looked…. Well…… not great.

Distorted, dark and dirty-looking high-end marble countertops in a kitchen that just looked really ugly. Can you imagine spending all that money to advertise to everyone who sees these billboards? And, how can you not see it? It’s everywhere! What are you advertising, that they are going to get a bad-looking kitchen? Who wants that?

And the thing is, it’s probably not the client’s fault either. Someone should have stepped in to guide them and set them up for success. Who knows maybe they wouldn’t listen to reason?

Yet I digress, use professional-level photography when you want your business to look professional.

Look, of course, I am biased here because I am a professional photographer. Think of professional photography as business attire (suit, dress, cape, whatever works for you). Think of regular photography as sweatpants. You don’t wear your sweatpants to a client meeting, and you don’t wear a suit to clean the house. I mean you can. Do whatever you want, but it’s not going to work well.

Please keep in my mind that my story is meant to be light-hearted in nature. I like to use real-world examples to give a bit of context

For all those internal photos you need to send around to colleagues, by all means, use your phone. But, for the stuff that really counts like your marketing hire a professional photographer you won’t regret it.

That’s It

Respect and Responsibility in Business Photography: Ethical Considerations in Photographing Employees

Respect and Responsibility in Business Photography: Ethical Considerations in Photographing Employees

So often, we see employee headshots, group photos of workers, or even candid snapshots of staff in the workplace on business websites. This has become an excellent, engaging way to create an emotional connection with customers, and it helps a business and brand to tell their story and add a feeling of authenticity to their marketing. By using employee photographs, a business goes from being an anonymous, faceless entity to one with a personality, an identity, and a face—or several.

However, when using employee photographs, obtaining consent from everyone in a shot is always important. It’s also imperative to ensure that they know and understand how and where the photographs will be used and what their participation means.
